As part of our long-standing interest in the prevention of violence against women and girls, MK Fawcett has started a project on Domestic Abuse. We have a specific focus on accommodation-based support for victims/survivors, who often need to leave their homes for their own safety. Having safe, secure accommodation helps people rebuild their lives away from abuse and harm. This is recognised in the 2021 Domestic Abuse Act, which specifies that local authority support for victims/survivors of domestic abuse should include accommodation-based support.
We monitor, and respond critically to, Milton Keynes City Council policy and practice on Domestic Abuse, in particular with respect to accommodation-based support. We are among a number of community groups who have been consulted on the process for producing the Council’s forthcoming new Domestic Abuse Strategy, and the Needs Assessment that underpins this. We suggested that the strategy include a broad definition of Domestic Abuse, including online abuse; a major focus on accommodation-based support for victims/survivors, consistent with the requirements of the 2021 Domestic Abuse Act; and the adoption of a critical, evidence-based approach explicitly informed by data.
